Sessions

Overview

I understand that every person is unique, so I tailor my process to best fit your needs. I love getting to know my clients and am always eager to help with session planning. In fact, I believe that the planning process is just as important as the day of the photo shoot.

I’m available to talk through ideas with you regarding all aspects of your session, such as clothing, location, props and more. I also have a number of props that I’d be happy to bring along to help your vision become a reality.

Below is a step-by-step guide of my process so you feel confident going into your session.

Session Walk Through

Step 1 - Session Prep

The more prepared we are the better your photos will be!

Clothing: Hey, accidents happen! The dreaded spills, grass stains, baby spit-up, etc... That's why I encourage everyone being photographed to bring at least one extra set of clothes (but the more the merrier!). Plus, different outfits will offer more variety for your photos.

Solid colors always photograph well, textured clothing works great for black and white photos, and interesting fabric prints can be very fun - especially for kids. Ultimately, stay true to your usual style but add a little extra flair. I always tell moms to pick out their outfit first and then build the family's outfits around that since coordinating yet not too "matchy", layered looks work best.

Accessories: Do you have a fun hat or an accessory that you'd like to incorporate into your photos? Bring it! I encourage creativity and thinking outside the box!

Location:Not sure of a great place? I have a few personal favorites I'd be happy to suggest, but am always game for trying something new (childhood cottage, amusement park, farm or some action shots on your speedboat). Certain times of day typically work better than others (early morning or late afternoon), but it ultimately depends on the location, so let's talk!

Step 2 - On Location

After preparation, we put our plan into action.

By this point, we've probably talked several times about the big day, and all of the planning has been well worth it. Now it's time to have some fun!

Timing: I always tell my clients to plan on us being together for about 1.5 – 2 hours on the day of the session. I don't set a firm limit on time or number of photos, which really gives us flexibility to capture some great moments.

Location: On the day of the session, we'll meet at the location you've chosen and briefly talk through ideas before we get started. Sometimes I visit sites beforehand to be sure we schedule the session when the light is at its best, so I may have a few ideas that we can discuss at that time.

Step 3 - Sneak Peek

Shortly after our session I'll have a few samples ready.

I know how exciting it can be to see those first few images. That's why I always send a few finished photos for you to preview while I finish setting up the rest of your gallery.

Once complete, I'll send you login information and a link to your password-secured gallery so you can begin reviewing your photos. Your gallery will be available for three weeks, and I encourage you to share it with friends and family.

Step 4 - Finalizing Your Edits

After you see your sneak peek, let's chat and make sure your photos are perfect.

You've looked through your photos a few times and hopefully love them. However, if there are any changes you'd like to see, please reach out! Maybe you've picked out a few photos for the living room wall and decided that you want them all in black and white (or color). Just let me know, and I'd be happy to make the edits so they fit your design.

Step 5 - Purchase Your Prints

Your photos are perfect! Now it's time to order some prints to share with loved ones or display on your walls.

We've finalized your photos to incorporate all of your edits. You've shared them with your family and friends, and everyone has selected their favorite images. Now what?

It's time time to place your order, right from your online gallery. You can choose a variety of sizes and display options. In just a few clicks, your images will be on their way to your home and ready to be enjoyed for years to come!

Not sure exactly what size prints would look the best? I want you to feel confident ordering your prints, and I'm here to help! As part of my service, I'm happy to meet with you in your home to talk through your vision and help you to determine the best images and sizes for your unique space. Let me know if you'd like to schedule this in-person meeting!

Helpful Tips

From my experience over the years as a photographer, here are a few notes of specific sessions that you may find helpful…

Maternity

Maternity photos are beautiful, no matter when they are taken, because they glorify the incredible journey of pregnancy  the unity of mom and baby and the beauty of your growing family.

Personally, my favorite time to capture this experience is during the final six weeks of pregnancy. Your tummy is nice and round by this time and perfect for taking photos!

If you are interested in telling the story of your babies birth I would love to to be part of this special event. I am available to travel to home or hospital, this can take some careful coordination and we will work together to make it happen.

Newborn

Newborns are best captured in the first two weeks of life while they are still in the very sleepy stage, so it’s best to reserve a date before the child is born to assure a spot on my calendar.

Because newborns are typically photographed with very little clothing, the ideal location is in a very warm house. I’m happy to come to your home for your session and usually include several shots of mom and dad with baby. Please note, this session may take a bit longer than my standard time, as I allow time for feeding, soothing and changing.

For what to wear at your newborn session I recommend keeping it simple and classic: a neutral camisole for mom, shirtless or snug fitting t-shirt for dad, and jeans/classic neutral dresses for siblings.

Children

Some children may be more hesitant and look to mom or dad for approval, so having mom and dad step away for a little bit may be beneficial. By temporarily removing mom and dad (you’re still close by!), I’m able to more easily connect with your child and capture his or her true personality. Playtime and snacks can also be incorporated if needed.

Free free to bring along a favorite item of your child's. It can be a teddy bear, an old wagon, a blankie, a special dress, a rocking horse... Use your imagination!
